20 Ways Twenty-Somethings Can Level Up in the New Year

People sometimes view their twenties as the last chance to really have fun and goof off. Many say it’s a period of life planning, a time to work hard so you can play hard later. Most view it as somewhere in between. No matter what end of the spectrum you’re on, it’s always beneficial for any one of any age to have some sort of goal.

Not sure where to start? No problem, we’ve put together a list of twenty ways twenty-somethings can begin to level up and become the best version of themselves.

Practicality

1. Vision Casting & Goal Creation

After a certain age, life begins to move at lightening speed. You’ve heard the phrase, “life is short.” Well, it’s true. One way to get a handle on the pace of life is to create attainable goals for yourself and have a vision for the future. You can easily do this with a vision board  or a planning journal. Many times we find ourselves unhappy with our current circumstances, and if it isn’t due to lack of patience or discontentment, it may be because we failed to envision what we wanted a certain part of our lives to look like. Start thinking about what you feel lead to do and working towards it.

2. Saving & Budgeting

It’s tempting to let the satisfaction with getting more money than you ever have in your life replace the nudge you feel to save for the future. Let’s not do that. As we said earlier, life goes by fast, and it’s easy to loose track of time. Start saving money for the day you no longer want to work for a living and keep track of your expenses.

3. New Skill Acquisition

Just because you just finished 12-24 years of schooling, doesn’t mean you have to stop learning. Learning new skills is personally enriching, and depending on your career field, can lead to advancement in the workplace. You can search for free videos and articles online or sign up for formal courses on topics relevant to your personal ambitions.

4. Digital Networking

It’s no where near as complex as it sounds. LinkedIn is not just for jobs. The career-focused website is great for maintaining relationships with former classmates and colleagues. It’s also great for forming new professional connections that can one day be taken offline.

5. Knowledge of Basic Money Management

After you start saving and budgeting, double down to make sure you actually understand the basics. Books like Why Didn’t They Teach Me This in School?: 99 Personal Money Management Principles to Live By teach you basic terminology, rules and conditions around how money actually works and how it’s handled our society.

6. Starting That Project

Just start. Write something down. Sign up for a free account. Send the email. Make the phone call. You may not have everything you need yet, and it may not be the right time, but what if it is? Even if you start humbly, the point is, you started.

7. Going Back to School

Graduate school has many benefits. The value of an advanced degree goes far beyond a salary hike. It can be personally enriching, build your professional network and even earn you another set of lifelong friends. In many professions, a graduate degree opens up another level of impact that can be used to help more people on a greater level. Find your “why” and plan your academic career accordingly.

Spirituality

8. Prayer & Devotion

Closeness to God is the best way to be the best version of ourselves. God knows exactly who we are, what we need and how to accomplish it. Spend some time in prayer and Biblical devotion and watch your life change.

9. Forgiveness

Holding a grudge will only cause you more emotional harm. You don’t have to re-establish a relationship with that person, but let whatever they did to you go, for your sake.

10. Service & Generosity

Giving to others requires sacrifice on our part, but comes with so many hidden blessings. While we may loose something we didn’t really need all to ourselves in the first place, we gain so much more. We are replenished, restored and reactivated when we release what we have to others.

11. Stopping Comparison

You have a unique purpose and calling, so why would your life look like his or hers. Stop comparing your journey to others’ journey when it’s not meant to look the same. You can loose yourself trying to live someone else’s life.

12. Positive Affirmation

Sometimes we just need a little reminder of who we are and what we can do to get us going. You can use sticky notes to place helpful, positive reminders, that you can easily access throughout the day, all around you.

13. Emotional Health Evaluation

Life is not always black and white. Things happen, and our souls sometimes pay the price for it. There’s nothing to be embarrassed about. What’s way worst than a fictitious stereotype is the accumulation of hurt and pain with no outlet. Therapy is a great tool for achieving internal freedom.

Soul

14. Friendships & Community

Friendship and community are great for the soul. There’s nothing quite like getting together with people who all have each other’s best interest at heart and want to see each other succeed. Surround yourself with great community who want to see you win and will cheer you on as you endeavor to reach higher heights.

15. Getting Out in Nature

Witnessing the beauty of the earth naturally boosts our mood and relieves stress. You don’t have to go on an elaborate, expensive vacation to do so either. The river a few miles away from your house, the park across the street or the public garden downtown will do just fine.

16. More Reading

Unplug from technology and immerse yourself in someone else’s reality. Take a break from the digital commotion to learn about someone else’s life experience, culture or philosophy with a good book.

17. Proper Resting

It’s hard to appreciate the benefits of an activity we take part in with almost no consciousness, but when we don’t have it, we definitely feel it. Try to get 7 – 9 hours of sleep each night even if you have to rearrange some things on your schedule.

18. Drinking Water

Don’t forget the power of water! The simple liquid substance substantially impacts internal and external parts of us from the clearness of the skin on our face to the protection of our spinal cords and joints. Health experts recommend about three liters a day for men and about two liters a day for women. Water bottles like the Bottlerix help you easily keep track of your water intake.

19. Travel Bucket List

Sometimes you just need to hop on a plane a get away for a while. It’s purely enjoyable to see new sights and participate in other cultures. Get yourself a travel planner and start dreaming!

20. Loving Others

The world can sometimes be a cold place. Make it better for everyone, including yourself, with your love.

We are so excited to be on this journey with you are here to cheer you on as you tackle your twenties!

How to Get Your Hands on a Hot Chocolate Bomb

This post contains affiliate links that help us stay in operation.

It’s a classic Christmastime treat with a contemporary twist. Hot Chocolate Bombs, nicknamed HCB’s, have filled the social sphere with child-like awe and have many wondering how they can add this modern delight to their Christmas kitchens.

We’ve done the research and have all the deets on how you can fill your holiday season with explosive, chocolaty bliss.

What’s Inside

Like many winter recipes, with HCB’s, you can get as creative as you want with the ingredients. The most obvious ingredients in the tasty round treats are, of course,  hot chocolate and marshmallows. However, if you’re a true foodie, you can try them with just about any type of candy crumble, syrup or spice. If you’re feeling really seasonal, your HCB’s can be filled with peppermint, ginger, brown sugar and the list goes on!

How It Works

After you decide on your flavor(s) of choice, the rest is simple. Just grab your milk or milk substitute and heat it over the stove, but make sure you turn it off before it starts to boil. Next, place your HCB in a mug and pour the milk you just heated over top of it. The heat from the milk will cause the ball to separate into your glass creating a warm, winter surprise.

Where to Get Them

Hot chocolate balls do not appear to be widely available in major retailers just yet. However you can find them on Amazon or on the original HotChocolateBalls.com website. You can also get hot chocolate bomb molds, and your favorite ingredients and make your own bombs! The chocolaty choice is yours.

Let us know what you decide and tag us for a shoutout on our socials!

Wishing  You The Best Winter Bliss,

Life After College: The Good, The Bad & The Beautiful

After one last spelling and grammar check, I drug my cursor over to the File tab to print my very last undergraduate college paper. Bending over emotionlessly in my desk chair, I grabbed several pages of public relations recommendations from the mouth of my printer.

My eyes had been glued to the screen for hours, but not anymore. I turned the bundle of papers right side up and not too soon after detected a glaring error. I quickly scrolled back through the paper, fixed the error, and raced over to the file tab to print, but this time was met with a resistant orange glow.

My printer had stopped working. After fumbling around for a few seconds trying to mentally sort out my printing options. I quickly got up from my chair, smoothed down my hair and headed over to the fast-casual dining hall to finish my print job. As usual, the lines were long and filled with late teens and early twenty-somethings attempting cram in one last late night meal.

Walking through the door for what I knew would be one of the last times felt like completing a secret time-traveling mission, the future and the present had caught up to each other. Very rarely do we recognize the “good ole days” as the good ole days, but when we do, its an experience that cuts deep into our perception of reality leaving an unmistakable tingling in our souls.

This is it. It’s over.

A few days later, I woke up at home to a cleansing spring breeze and an almost-Summer sunny day. My eyes opened to a different ceiling, a new horizon and a changing season.

It had ended just as quickly as it started.

Graduation day was anticlimactic but held a strong-silent power. My college was the last to graduate in the university and the smallest. There were empty chairs left over from the other graduations that happened earlier that week.

We went in, got our names called, heard a few speeches and that was that. I didn’t have a job lined up, but went through my last three months bearing a big secret. I barely told anyone.

I had gotten into graduate school, a graduate school linked to one of the best universities in the country.

Being part public relations major drew many multi-level marketing companies to my email inbox. Many times I didn’t know what was up until I went through unlikely job scenarios like group interviews or meetings at random locations.

One day, when I went back to my off-campus apartment to finish moving out the rest of my things, I got a phone call. It was from a small, family-run company on the outskirts of town.

Turns out, it was more than a phone call. It was a phone interview. I thought I did pretty good, at least better than the last one where they called hours earlier than expected, in-between classes.

A little while later, I went in for a face-to-face interview and right after Independence Day, I had a marketing job at a for-profit company which I later realized was rare in my region.

It was a fresh, fun environment with pizza Fridays, weekly happy hours, monthly birthday parties, wedding and baby showers and holiday parties. It took an hour for me to get there by bus and train, thirty minutes to get to my graduate campus back from work and thirty minutes home after a two hour, thirty minute class, but it was worth it.

It was all worth it.

Five Ways to Make Your Home Cozier for 24-Hour COVID Living

This post contains affiliate links that help us stay in operation.

In 2020, the home became way more than just a place to rest after work and on the weekends. Homes today are 24-hour multi-purpose living hubs used for working, learning, socializing, rejuvenating and the list goes on.

Most of us never expected or even conceptualized having to spend so much of our lives indoors, and not many homes are equipped for around-the-clock inhabitance. However, with a few minor adjustments, you can turn your home into your very own four-wall oasis.

Here’s how!

1. Clean Up.

If it’s difficult to function at home on a normal evening or weekend with clutter, then it’s two times as difficult to spend the majority of your day in a cluttered home. Invest in some easy to use, but effective cleaning products and tools like a robo vacuum and multi-purpose sprays to make your time cleaning impactful, but easy.

2. Do What You’ve Always Wanted.

Have you been dreaming of carving out a space for your very own home office, adding a new splash of color to your kitchen or spicing up your living room? Now is THE TIME! Take some time to finally get that small home improvement project out of the way to enjoy your space just a little bit more.

3. Work Smarter, Not Harder.

COVID has shown more than any other event in history that we are truly in the digital error. Technology is here to stay and will become even more ingrained into our everyday lifestyles. Make multi-tasking at your everyday abode simple with easy-to-use and entertaining smart devices.

4. Add Ambience.

Take all the smells, sights, sounds and even tastes from your favorite places are bring them to your home (maybe not all at once, unless that’s your thing – lol)! Try to recreate that authentic Penne pasta from your trip to Italy, bring the scent from your trip to a tropical shoreline to your bedroom or listen to songs you saw performed live last year at that music festival. Get creative and have fun doing it!

5. Stay Connected.

What’s life without God, family and friends? Keep in touch with those your love to maintain good emotional health and continued joy. Fill your home with voices of comfort and care, not only for your sake, but also for there’s. This is our shared struggle and we can help each other through it. The smallest gesture like a text or a quick phone call can turn someone’s whole day around.

Have any additional ideas? Let us know.

Happy Homing!

Spread Love, Not COVID: Just Because Gifts for Your Significant Other

This post contains affiliate links that help us stay in operation.

For many, COVID can seem like an impediment to romance and an obstacle to relational growth. However, with the right mindset, it can actually be the opposite. COVID is even more of a reason to go all out with creative and memorable expressions of love and appreciation.

You can go old-school and stand outside their window with a boombox and their favorite song. You can turn to nature and take them on a brisk hike with their favorite snack, or you can even buy them a thoughtful gift. It doesn’t even have to be expensive. Remember, thoughtfulness is of more value than money.

Here are a few memorable COVID gift ideas.

1. Mug

Everyone loves a good mug. People are drinking more coffee and tea than ever, so a mug is definitely a gift that won’t be neglected. When it comes to picking a mug for your significant other, think about the context of your relationship.

What’s a dream they’ve expressed in conversation or an inside joke you that gets you both every time. Get a mug that builds on that moment to make it even more meaningful.

2. Candle or Scents

Most of us now spend most of our time at home. That means our candles, diffusers and scented wall plug-ins have been working overtime and we probably need new ones.

Send your loved-one a candle, essential oil scent or plug-in that reminds them of a trip you’ve taken together or somewhere you’ve been wanting to go (but couldn’t, possibly because of shutdown mandates).

3. Personalized Photo

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, well during times of COVID, it’s probably worth up to a trillion. How often do you find yourself looking back at photos from old events that you enjoyed while visually reliving the experience? With a personalized photo, your significant other can relive that day over and over again.

4. Chocolate or Fancy Snack

Who doesn’t love chocolate? Believe or not, there is always one, but just one. Gift your loved-one a delightful box of chocolates, one of the most classic ways to say, “I love you,” or a gourmet selection of one of their favorite treats. It’s even more impressive when its wrapped in a pretty box!

5. Personalized Plant

If you’re anywhere on social media, you’ve heard of the new trend of young adults becoming “plant parents.” People are finding joy in adopting and sustaining plants and love giving parent-like milestone updates on social media. It’s loads of fun and can actually help improve the quality of air in your home, great for people cooped inside.

You can make your significant other a plant parent by starting out with the small, and hard to destroy succulent. What’s even better is if you select a plant vase with a sweet message on it like “Life would succ without you.”

These are just a few simple ways you can woo your loved-one during times of shutdown and contribute even more thoughtfully to your budding romance.

Career

Five Lessons from My First Job Out of College

If you’re reading this, congratulations! All of your hard work has paid off, and although you’ll still have to work hard, now, you’ll actually get paid for it. You’re at the official start of your career and ready to take the work world by storm, as are millions of your peers worldwide.

I was just like you, confident, prepared and ready to learn more; however, there are areas I wish I knew how to handle better, small things that can have a big impact, and as a result, I’m sharing them with you.

When you come across complex situations at work, an experience that is almost inevitable, I want you to have this as your toolkit for informed decision-making and interactions.

Here goes!

1. Pay attention and observe.

Don’t be afraid to scope out the scene. As humorously pointed out on social media, when new employees join a company or organization, people for some reason feel the need to paint their workplace as a pristine utopia, showering you with smiles and “you’ll love it here’s.”

While that may be true, wherever there are people, there is imperfection. I am not trying to bring down your mood, but to be realistic. Look for the pain points, the troublemakers and the soft spots. You can actually turn this around for good!

After taking note of these elements, you can use your knowledge and what may start off as a light workload to begin providing solutions to these problems. As for the trouble-makers, I’m not saying for you to go and try to be a life-changing intervention, but take note of their interaction style so you’ll know how to work with them when the time comes. That leads me to my next point.

2. Don’t be afraid to make suggestions.

While there may be some who are a bit intimidated by newcomers (again, another cringe-worthy truth), most will be excited for a fresh perspective and set of ideas. People want what you have to offer, and that’s why you were hired.

Don’t be afraid to chime in during appropriate moments at meetings or speak with your supervisor afterward about possibly presenting your new ideas in the next one. People both want and need what your unique perspective brings.

3. Stay teachable.

With that being said, don’t get big-headed. You know a lot, but not everything. Remember you (in many cases, but not all) will sometimes will be surround by decades-long career veterans who know the industry and know it well.

While they may not be up-to-speed on the latest trends, they have a strong understanding developed over several years of what works and what doesn’t. Don’t just respect them, learn from them and add their approach, as appropriate, to your toolbox as well.

4. Be yourself.

You will spend a third of your day at work if you have a traditional schedule. That’s a lot of your life spent with co-workers. Now, I am by no means encouraging you to be a kiss-up or fall into the trap of people pleasing. I am not even saying you have to be best-buddies with your coworkers, but you do want to have some type of relationship.

At least be on good terms. Say hello, ask them how they’re doing, give them updates on how you’re doing, and just be yourself. Attend a few after-hours office events and holiday parties to build on your in-office chemistry.

Don’t expect or try to get everyone to like you, but make an effort to be professionally cordial to improve the enjoyability of your at-work experience.

5. Be generous.

Over the years, I’ve noticed that those who are the most successful, both in and out of the office are the most giving. When I say giving, I am not taking about money, I’m referring to grace, kindness, favors and time.

Now, don’t become that person who clearly does stuff for others just to get ahead, another type of kiss-up, but be genuine, be authentic. Do it because that’s who you want to be as a person and the lifestyle you want to live.

What may help is listening to your intuition to determine just the right moment to do so. Send someone an email telling them they did great during a presentations, bring in donuts for the office or offer to help someone (only if you can) who has an extra heavy workload for the week.

You’ll know when its time.

I believe in you and your power to make an impact in your everyday work life. Keep an encouraging message on your desk everyday to remind you of your true potential and power!

Here’s to a Successful Career!

Road Trip Essentials for Safe, Socially Distant Travel

This post contains affiliate links that help us stay in operation.

With COVID-19 still in our midst, many are continuing to take precautions when it comes to traveling. Just after Labor Day, people begin to express how they missed taking their annual summer vacations.

As the weather cools in many parts of the country, and COVID-19 safety measures evolve, travelers are hoping to somehow get a safe, socially-distant trip in even if it means staying closer to home than normal.

For those craving a break from 24-hour home life, a road trip may be the best option. Most will be surprised to know that almost every metropolitan area has a scenic route no longer that an hour or two outside of town. Be sure to check for scenic spots in your state.

The truly adventurous may want to travel across country taking breaks to sleep in their cars or even at camp sites, weather permitting. The choice it totally up to you. We’ve provided a list of travel essentials for a safe, socially distant road trip that you’ll never forget.

  • Portable Charger or Car Charger

There will probably never be a year like 2020 ever again! (Let’s hope not.) This fact coupled with the beautiful scenery you’ll see along the way will make you want to take plenty of photos and videos as a keepsake. You’ll probably also want to get at least a few good video clips for your social stores.

You most certainly don’t want your battery to run out miles aways from wherever it is you think you will be able to charge it. Be sure to bring a sturdy portable charger or a car charger.

  • Snacks & Drinks

What’s any trip without snacks and drinks? Be sure to stock up on your all-time favorites to make the ride even more of a treat! Grab that pastry you’ve been wanting to try or those veggie chips you’ve been wanting to taste. Now is the time.

  • Music

Use your favorite music streaming service to create a playlist of your favorite driving tunes before you go. Most services give you a total calculation of how long your playlist is, so if you’d like, you can time your playlist to match the duration of your trip.

If you’re more of a podcast person, you can make a playlist of your favorite shows. This will keep you company if traveling alone and create interesting talking points if you’re with a group.

  • Blanket

Blankets are multi-functional. You can use them to get cozy on the way to your destination, especially if you live in a place that experiences all for seasons. You can ball them up and turn them into a pillow or you can spread them out for a picnic stop at a scenic location.

Just bring one so you won’t regret it.

  • Sanitizers, Masks & Virus Protection

Remember, COVID is still a threat. Be sure to stock up on hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, masks, a thermometer and everything you need to keep yourself safe!

  • Trash Bin

After several snacks and iced coffee, you’ll probably have a good amount of trash. Don’t let a messy vehicle make your trip uncomfortable. Also, if you’re taking your voyage outdoors, you won’t want to leave litter. Designate an easily portable trash receptacle for life on the road.

Are you thinking of taking a road trip? Take a few photos, and tag us! We want to know how it goes.

Happy Travels!

Finding Purpose After College

Your early 20s can be rough. They’re a marriage between reality and your lifelong dreams. They can also be a great awakening, a time when you get everything you’ve always hoped for and then realize it’s not really what you want.

I’ve been there, and by God’s grace, I’ve survived it. I am by no means saying I’m an expert at life or spirituality, but I have been able to learn some key life lessons, and I want to share them with you.

So here it goes!

In order to gain clarity in your early twenties, you can start with these three habits.

Be In-Touch With Yourself.

Life can sometimes be so routine that we lose track of who we are. All we’re focused on is what’s next on our possibly outdated list of milestones.

Over the course of life, and even in the span of just a few years, you’ll grow, you’ll develop, you’ll change your mind, you’ll get rid of some things and you’ll pick up new ones.

In the first few years of your young adulthood, this can happen so rapidly that you don’t even realize it. Your subconscious is working overtime on what’s happening now, while your conscious mind is busy roaming a future that may or may not be accurate.

Take some time to intentionally evaluate how you’ve changed and who you are now. If not, society will try to do so, sometimes with good intentions, other times just to hear itself talk and, occasionally, for selfish ambition.

Know yourself.

Communicate with God.

If you’re having a hard time forming your personal truth, seek the One who created you. No one knows you better than your Maker. The Bible contains several objective truths about your high worth and value. It can also serve as a reminder of the true power you have when you tap into God’s Holy Spirit.

Read the scriptures and let them be a framework for your identity and existence. Watch doors begin to swing open as you partner with God to walk in your divine purpose.

Think about others.

At the end of the day, no matter how much you believe you want the “high life” or a life of luxury, it’s people that make the world go round. The old phrase is still used for a reason. It’s true.

This point has two parts: your people and other people.

Begin taking your community seriously, your friendships, your church, your extracurricular buddies, etc. Good friends and community affirm the best parts about us. Think about your role in these groups and what it says about you.

That leads to the next important people point, others. Our purpose is rarely about us, but how we can help the next person. If you want to make an impact, start by simply thinking about what you’re good at, and how that can help others.

The Bible says in Matthew 23:11, “But he who is greatest among you shall be your servant.”

Check out young adult study Bibles made just for those of us in this unique stage of life for more specific Biblical support.

Kindly,
